Augie took the keys Rory gave him and drove over looking for the yellow house by the church. It wasn’t hard to find, and pulling up in the driveway, he had no doubt that Rory would love it. It looked like something out of a fairytale with all its white decorative trim, rounded bay windows and pointed gables on the tile roof. When he had heard that it was yellow, he hadn’t held much hope for that color, but it was a bright, cheery sunflower yellow that he knew Rory adored. He unlocked the front door and walked around the house, knowing with every step he made Rory would never want to leave here.

Once he’d made himself familiar with the house, he went outside and started bringing in their stuff. He hung her clothes in the closet in the master bedroom, and put all her toiletries and blow dryer and curling irons in the attached bathroom. Then he carried in all her paintings and put them in the smallest of the three bedrooms.

He brought in his clothes and put them in the second largest bedroom. He put their food in the kitchen and their pots and pans and dishes and silverware, too. Then he made sure the house was locked up tight, and drove over to the furniture store Gladys told him about. He picked out a bed and a dresser for each of their rooms, and a sectional for the living room.

Then he went to the register to pay.

“We do have new furniture, too. Just saying,” the man checking him out said.

“Yeah. I looked at it, but my sister loves old stuff. She says it has a life all its own. Since it’s her house, used it is.”

“I get that. Women are weird about things like that.”

“They can be,” Augie agreed.

“So, how you expecting to get it all home?”

“Figured I’d just make a couple of trips and see if maybe a neighbor or something could help me get it in,” Augie answered.

“For an extra twenty-five dollars, we can deliver.”

“Seriously? How much to help me carry it inside and get it in the rooms it’ll go in?”

“Fifty if it’s within ten miles, seventy-five if it’s within twenty. Gas has gone up,” he said as he gave Augie his change.

Augie handed him fifty dollars back. “You know the little yellow house by the church?”

“Yeah, I do, that place has been empty for a while.”

“Well, it’s not anymore. When can you be there?”

“We close at 5:30. My guys will be there right after, before 6:00 definitely.”

“I’ll be waiting.”

Augie headed home, stopping at the little discount store for sheets and comforters, then went back home to wait for the beds and the sofa to be delivered, before going back to the cafe for dinner.
